Wellington Central - Big On Environment

Media Release

Big on environment - Big on success

A ministerial opening this week emphasises the success of environmentally sound business practices.

Minister for the Environment, Hon. Marian Hobbs, will be the guest of honour at the official opening of the new Cartridge World Wellington Central store on August 21. Cartrige World Wellington Central is owned and operated by Bill and Helen Swan, who also manage the highly successful Cartridge World Lower Hutt store.

Cartridge World specialises in allowing customers to reuse their empty inkjet, laser, photocopier and fax cartridges. It is a global company with 280 stores worldwide and is recognised as the international leader in the field of refilling cartridges, an industry developed to combat the high prices being charged by original equipment manufacturers on their consumables. Refilling and remanufacturing of cartridges is a sound option both economically and environmentally as it minimises waste, conserves energy, reduces pollution, and saves money.

Just released research, undertaken by BRC Research, shows that more than 1.2 million printer cartridges are disposed of in general household rubbish every year. This means that New Zealand households are dumping more than 209 tonnes of cartridges into the country's landfills each year - the equivalent of the combined weight of two All Black rugby teams every week. A breakdown of the national figures indicates Wellington households dump an estimated 7.7 tonnes of used cartridges in the central Wellington region every year. And that's just the tip of the e-waste problem in New Zealand.

Early in the development of Cartridge World Lower Hutt, Bill and Helen identified there was a great opportunity to offer Cartridge World services to businesses and individuals based in central Wellington. They were confident that Wellington people would enjoy both the financial and environmental benefits of choosing to refill their cartridges. They are delighted that after only 2 years in business they have been able to turn this potential opportunity into reality.

The official opening of Cartridge World Wellington Central will be on Thursday August 21, at 1pm. The store is located on Level 1 of the Grand Arcade, 16 Willis St, Wellington.

Hon Marian Hobbs, Minister for the Environment, will speak to guests at the opening. Invited guests include small, medium and large corporate business representatives as well as local government representatives from both Wellington and Hutt City.
